Description of Work/Type of Construction:
BE&K, in association with BRPH, utilized the design/build method to complete the design, permitting, site preparation and construction of a two-bay C-130 aircraft hangar with supporting shop space.

The total scope of the new building is approximately 69,500 sf. Each bay is capable of enclosing one C-130 aircraft. One bay is used for periodic aircraft washing, the other for aircraft painting. The painting bay requires special filtered airflow to achieve consistent paint deposition. Supporting shop space includes sheet metal repair, paint blast booths, parts/tools storage, administration, rest rooms and supporting utility systems.

Services on this project included the demolition of approximately 6,000 sf of existing structures and an existing concrete pad used for washing aircraft. Also included were aircraft access pavement to each bay from the adjacent parking apron, and vehicle parking pavement. An interim outdoor wash and aircraft tie-down anchor on existing pavements was provided to accommodate existing functions during construction of the new facility.

Unique Aspects of Project:
BE&K used the efficiencies of the design/build construction delivery method to trim six months off of the government’s 24-month project schedule. Unique aspects included an initial partnering session; utilization of the Dr. Checks web-based drawing review system; coordination by BRPH and the contractor with a number of specialty consultants; a design that exceeded the Army SPiRiT sustainable design bronze rating; and incorporation of all the relevant military and local installation design standards.
