Description of Work/Type of Construction:
BE&K, in partnership with prime contractors Rush Construction, Inc. (of Titusville, FL) and Sherlock, Smith & Adams, Inc. (of Montgomery, AL) as the design lead, provided structural, mechanical, HVAC and plumbing electrical design services for a two-story, 91,000 sf, high-tech educational facility. The facility is utilized to provide training for all branches of the armed forces personnel (Army, Navy, Marines and Reserve Units) assigned to equal employment opportunity responsibilities.
The facility accommodates more than 400 students, and houses classrooms, faculty offices, a library, support functions, a computer room, break rooms, research facilities, and a multi-purpose auditorium that can be used as a classroom, a conference room or a ceremonies room. This high-tech facility is equipped with closed-circuit video systems that allow for the monitoring and taping of individual classes. There are also areas for production and post-production of video programs.
Unique Aspects of Project:
The DEOMI building is a “Green Building”. It was purposefully designed to reduce both the direct and indirect environmental consequences associated with construction, occupancy, operation, maintenance and eventual decommissioning. Several value-added design features were key elements in the success of this project, including the incorporation of federal anti-terrorism/force protection standards into the building’s design.
