Description of Work/Type of Construction:
The goal of this project was to remove 3,801 linear feet of fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipe and to replace it with new Hastelloy™ pipe and carbon steel pipe. The project was completed at the Pine Bluff Chemical Demilitarization Facility (PBCDF) in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The scope of work, contracted by the Washington Demilitarization Company LLC for the U.S. Army, utilized BE&K’s in- house photogrametry technology to verify drawing dimensions and to identify flaws in the design. BE&K cut costs by shop-fabricating all of the routed pipe. Work included the removal of the existing fiberglass reinforced piping (FRP) system, along with the installation, testing and cleaning of the Class “L” and Class “AB” piping systems associated with the Pollution Abatement system at the facility.
This project involved two phases, beginning with concurrent work on the metal parts furnace and common header, followed by the replacement of piping on the liquid incinerator furnace and deactivation furnace. Work consisted of replacing the fiberglass pipe with a higher-strength Hastelloy™ pipe. BE&K was also responsible for replacing all in-line instruments and associated electrical wiring. Insulation, heat-trace and performance tests were also included in the scope of work.
Unique Aspects of Project:
Work was performed in a highly contained facility. There were heightened security requirements because the nature of the materials processed at this facility constrained productivity, as did the high hazard environment. BE&K’s craft workers had to be escorted 100% of the time while on the project site, and it was necessary to plan work several weeks in advance to properly forecast our escort needs.
Effective use of subcontractors was a critical component in BE&K’s success with this DOD project. In some cases, we enlisted subs to work overtime in an effort to meet intermediate project goals. A strong working relationship with our subs led to the formation of a reliable and flexible team. As a result, we now have a special group of pre-qualified subcontractors all around the U.S. who are readily available to support this significant contract.
