Description of Work/Type of Construction:
BE&K, in association with Scairono Martinez Architects and Aegis Construction, was awarded a design-build contract for the design, permitting, site preparation, and construction of a new National Guard Readiness Center at Reserve, LA. The facility will be used for training, mobilizing, and deploying troops during natural disasters and other emergencies.
The project scope includes construction of a new 32,500 square foot Readiness Center with supporting shop space and administrative areas in addition to exterior fire protection, military vehicle parking, access roads, POV parking, security fencing, dark motor pool lighting, maintenance training work-bay, vehicle wash system, loading ramp, flammable materials storage building, controlled waste handling facility, and sidewalks. The Center, located in Reserve, LA near New Orleans, will support 176 soldiers.
Physical security measures incorporated into the design include maximum feasible standoff distance from roads, parking areas, vehicle unloading areas, berms, heavy landscaping, and bollards to prevent access when standoff distance cannot be maintained. The design also features cost-effective energy-conserving elements and will be commissioned at the Gold-level SPiRiT rating.
This project utilizes the efficiencies inherent to the design-build delivery process to trim time off of the government's 20-month project schedule. Effective partnering and coordination with the customer and several specialty consultants by BE&K and Scairono Martinez Architects resulted in the successful incorporation of all relevant military and local installation design standards.
