Description of Work/Type of Construction:
BE&K, in association with BRPH, was awarded a design-build contract for the design, permitting, site preparation, and construction of a new state-of-the-art logistics warehouse at the Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Gulfport, Mississippi. In addition to the warehouse construction, the contract includes a public works facility renovation, construction of a new gate inspection facility, demolition of existing facilities, construction of a rapid runway repair area, and construction of an NCTC scraper practice area.

The warehouse, or Operational Expeditionary Logistics Facility (OELF), will support the shipment of containerized war-fighting equipment to support Naval Construction Forces (NCF) and consolidate the operations of three existing obsolete and damaged facilities, resulting in more efficient receipt, storage, preparation, and shipping operations. Significantly improved force protection and traffic flow to the base will be realized with the new gate inspection station. The project involves approximately 234,000 sf new construction and 19,000 sf of renovated space along with 370,000 sf of demolition.

Efficiencies related to the design-build process are being utilized to compress the government's 36-month project schedule. BE&K and BRPH applied effective coordination and communications skills to partner with several specialty consultants and facilitate the drawing review process. The resulting design successfully incorporates all relevant military and local installation design standards as well as the sustainable design features required to obtain LEED certification.
