Description of Work/Type of Construction:
This project was awarded as a Task Order under the Streamlined Construction Improvement Program (SCIP) IDIQ, by DeCA, the Defense Commissary Agency, under the Air Force's AETC. DeCA's contracting branch has been moved to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and now administers the SCIP Program through the Kansas City District. BE&K's performance was rated as Above Average by the Contracting Officer.

This project entails the addition and alterations to an existing 79,000 sf commissary facility while in full operation. Renovations to the commissary began in November of 2007. The enhancement of this commissary features new construction of a grand entryway at the front of the store, designed to match the remaining existing storefront, and the phased demolition and complete remodel of the store's interior.

Interior construction relates to the phased upgrading of existing refrigeration systems, all new HVAC equipment, and relocation of grocery departments within the building. Construction includes concrete curbs and slabs, structural steel framing, miscellaneous carpentry, casework and trim, doors, windows and glazing, drywall systems, floor and wall coverings, décor components, painting, acoustical tile ceilings, specialties and equipment, plumbing, HVAC systems, electrical power, lighting and special systems.

One element of the new store design required the removal of a structural load bearing masonry wall, which also served as a parapet wall at the roof level. This mandated the addition of new structural elements - columns and beams - to carry the load of the roof at this location. To protect commissary patrons during demolition and remodeling, temporary tunnels were constructed inside the store, linking grocery departments and checkout stands.

Physical security measures incorporated into the design include, but are not limited to, the use installation of removable bollards at the parking lot entrances to prevent access, all new exterior doors open out, and blast resistant glazing systems are utilized.
