Description of Work/Type of Construction:
This project was awarded as a Task Order under the Streamlined Construction Improvement Program (SCIP) IDIQ, by DeCA, the Defense Commissary Agency, under the Air Force's AETC. DeCA's contracting branch has been moved to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and now administers the SCIP Program through the Kansas City District. BE&K's performance was rated as Outstanding by the Contracting Officer.

This project entailed the phased alteration, remodel and upgrade of systems to an existing commissary facility while in full operation. The original building featured a structural steel frame on cast-in-place concrete foundations, masonry exterior walls and a single-ply roof. The building, following renovations, is approximately 86,000 sf.

Interior construction included a new two-story administration area constructed in the exiting warehouse. Completion of this feature allowed its occupancy and the demolition of the existing administration area at the front of the store. This space was remodeled and utilized as additional retail space. Existing refrigeration and HVAC systems were upgraded and replaced, and the existing grocery departments were demolished and relocated, receiving all new equipment and finishes. New interior features include concrete curbs and slabs; structural steel framing, drywall systems, and wall finishes; miscellaneous carpentry, casework and trim; doors, windows and glazing; floor coverings; acoustical tile ceilings; décor components; specialties and equipment; new plumbing; and power, lighting and special systems.

Exterior renovation scope included maintenance and repair associated with doors and frames; partial roof replacement, and alterations to accommodate new mechanical and refrigeration equipment. New exterior construction featured a new administration entrance, complete with curved brick to match the existing facade.
